Picturing High Streets | Exhibition
Historic England and Photoworks present the Picturing High Streets outdoor exhibition,
touring towns and cities across England from March 2023.
A panel of judges included designer and retail expert Wayne Hemingway,
renowned artist Camille Walala, Ben Hope, Clear Channel’s Marketing Director,
and Duncan Wilson, Chief Executive of Historic England who made the final selection of photographs.
The winning selection of images are on display from March 2023 filling advertising spaces,
outdoor exhibition panels, shop windows on high streets and on projections at
The Photographers’ Gallery in London at the Soho Photography Quarter and Clear Channel advertising spaces across England.
These photographs entered the Historic England Archive, the nation’s archive for England’s historic buildings,
archaeology and social history. The collection presents a snapshot of a year in the life of the English high street,
documenting and celebrating the people, places and stories it holds.

“Many traditional, authentic shop front facades that are still here today catch my eye - be
it by their colour palettes, typeface or tiling & interiors, it can often feel like stepping
back in time - this all adds to the uniqueness of this country and is reminiscent of a past era.
If there’s one thing that has become more apparent in the seaside towns I find myself
revisiting, it’s that the future & face of Britain's high street is changing.”
